Kid friendly restaurants in Grand Cayman

We know from experience that travelling with kids can be daunting, as well as expensive – especially eating out. Remember to do your research before your trip and be sure you have a game plan. You can always change it up when you get there.

Local food in the islands can be a bit spicy but there are also plenty of options here in Grand Cayman for kids and those with a less fiery palate. It’s also important for mom and dad that the kids can have fun, allowing you to relax and enjoy your meal.

Here are our favorite kid friendly restaurants in Grand Cayman for eating out on a budget:

Kaibo

Kaibo Restaurant - Grand Cayman

Kaibo Restaurant – Grand Cayman

A great lunch or dinner venue, Kaibo is the ultimate beach bar-restaurant in Grand Cayman. It is best done by boat as you park right at their dock and walk straight down. Combine lunch and a cocktail with your visit to Stingray City and Starfish Point. We love it for kids because you sit right on the beach and can watch them from your table while they look for shells. Bring buckets and spades and you have an hour or so of built in kids entertainment, or take a walk down the dock and see fish the fish and the boats in the marina. Try the brick oven made pizzas for the kids and they are quite large so one is great to split between two.

Sunshine Grill

Sunshine Suites Grand Cayman

Sunshine Suites Grand Cayman

Located at the Sunshine Suites hotel in the heart of Seven Mile Beach, this colourful and casual pool side restaurant is a hidden local gem – it’s also consistently top-rated on TripAdvisor. The menu puts a Caribbean twist to some old favourites, and it’s great for the wallet! Play the trivia games provided on every table while you wait for your meal. Great picks are the award winning island fish tacos and the jalapeño fries (for the adults) and sliders for the kids.

Cimboco

A fun place for breakfast or brunch, this island grill is decked out with a bright Caribbean whimsical theme and has an open kitchen – you can watch as your meal is prepared fresh by the chefs. The staff at Cimboco are very child-friendly and the kids menu offers Caribbean-inspired breakfast flatbread pizza, along with the more traditional eggs-and-toast meals. Ask for coloring paper and crayons and enjoy your breakfast knowing the kids are entertained. The orange juices are large serving – for toddlers order one and split it between two.

Waterfront Urban Diner

In the heart of Camana Bay Waterfront Urban Diner is a great restaurant for kids. Sit outside and enjoy the breeze and the kids can play on the grass when they have exhausted their limits of staying put at the table. Even better – bring bikes and scooters along for some additional adult quiet time. We like it for breakfast/brunch and the kids menu is not only reasonably priced, but portion sizes are perfect for little ones to have their own meal.

Stingrays Finally Protected in the Cayman Islands!

The boating and tourism industry here in Cayman is celebrating following the long awaited passing of legislation to afford Southern Stingrays (of Stingray City fame) full protection throughout Cayman Islands waters. The protection is also afforded to Eagle Rays and Manta Rays.

On May 17, 2013 an important amendment to the Marine Conservation Law was gazetted following a lengthy period of debate and public consultation. The catalyst for the final result was the much publicised release of several rays from the facility of Dolphin Discovery in West Bay. Four out of ten rays being held there in captivity in tanks as part of their attraction were found to have tags on them indicating that they were rays that had been tagged in the North Sound by scientists as part of a project to compile a census of rays at the Sandbar/Stingray City sites. The tagged rays were subsequently released by the Department of Environment staff following public outcry, but the rays which did not have tags are still being held captive as it could not be proven that these rays had been taken from within the protected WIZ zone. Representatives from Dolphin Discovery say they have no plans to release the remaining rays, believing them now to be “grandfathered in” and that the newly enacted legislation does not apply to those rays already held in captivity.

The Cayman Islands Tourism Association made a statement welcoming the amendment to the law:

“Protecting the southern stingrays and ‘rays’ in the Cayman Islands is a forward step in a positive direction, not only for our marine environment, but also for our tourism product,” said Jane van der Bol, executive director of Cayman Islands Tourism Association.

Charter Cayman is delighted to see the rays finally afforded the protection they deserve so that they can be cherished by all for years to come.

Let the Good Times Roll! - Mardi Gras Cayman Islands 2013

Mardi Gras, or “Fat Tuesday” is traditionally celebrated in the Cayman Islands on the Public Holiday (usually Ash Wednesday). The majority of Cayman residents do not have to work on Ash Wednesday. This, together with the perfect weather that often accompanies this time of year in the Cayman Islands make it a perfect excuse to flock to the beaches, and spend time on the water for sun, sea, sand and good times!

The tradition of Mardi Gras arose with the celebrations and revelry that followed a day of feasting on rich, fatty foods and drinking to excess on the day before what is traditionally the start of a fasting period in many cultures; Lent. Many countries continue to evoke the tradition and dress in costume, wear masks, and of course wear and trade beads. It really is an excuse to party, eat, drink and be merry.

In Cayman the biggest celebration occurs at Kaibo, where they host a Mardi Gras event, usually a party on the beach not to be missed. It has been a must-attend feature in the local calendar for many years. The traditional method of travel is – BOAT. This year, Kaibo Mardi Gras is 13 February 2013.

So, if you’re on island, want to experience a bit of Cayman’s pop-culture AND want to do it in style – consider chartering your own private boat. One of our captains can take you so you don’t have to worry about driving. It’s your boat so take as many, or as few people with you as you like. You can even plan to include a stop at Stingray City, or snorkel spot. Charter Cayman is a true private boat charter experience. Email info@chartercayman.com or call 1 (345) 916 0230 to make your reservation. Call now – space is limited.

Snorkel the Kittiwake Wreck Grand Cayman - Private Charter

Charter Cayman is now officially licensed to take snorkel tours to the wreck of the Kittiwake in Grand Cayman which rests upright on a sandy bottom in 62 feet of water off Seven Mile Beach. See this wreck for yourself on your own private charter boat.

The USS Kittiwake was originally launched in 1945 to assist with WWII submarine operations as a rescue vessel, escorting the submarines during their maneuvers during sea trials to monitor diving operations. She was stationed initially in the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico but during her reign her missions took her across the atlantic to the mediterranean (Spain and Greece). She was decommissioned in 1994 and purchased by the Cayman Islands Government for an undisclosed amount to be sunk as a dive site. She was finally laid to rest in January 2011.

Primarily a dive site, as a snorkeller you can see the main deck and the topography of the ship as well as look down the smoke stack which opens at the bottom of the hull in the engine rooms. It is also a very interesting site for Freediving as the depth makes for some interesting swim-throughs.

To visit this site a permit must be obtained, and Cayman operators who take snorkel tours must be officially licensed by the Cayman Islands Toursism Association in order to take guests.

This is an advanced snorkel site but definitely one not to be missed if you are a wreck enthusiast. Various species of fish also inhabit this wreck and as the visibility here in Grand Cayman is usually excellent, you will be able to see some of them from the surface.

Charter Cayman Supports Movember!

Charter Cayman proudly supports Movember, a worthy global fundraising event for men’s cancers when the month formerly known as November changes shape as men around the world grow (or attempt to grow) a moustache. During the month of November each year, Movember asks men across the world to grow a moustache with the aim of raising vital funds and awareness for men’s health issues. Movember moustaches were first grown in Australia back in 2003 and since that time word of Movember and its men’s health messages have spread across the globe. Cayman is no exception, in fact, anyone who happens to arrive during this month may well ask why so many men sport crazy facial hair, especially in this hot climate.

For more information about Movember globally, click here. For information about Cayman’s Movember, to donate or to find out about local events click here.

Movember events on island are about to culminate with the Mosquerade Ball, 30th November at Elements.

In the true Mo’spirit, check out Wayne’s Mo – something that even Freddie Mercury would be proud of and good enough to frighten small children! We think the wives will definitely be glad to see the back end of this month when the taches come off and we can all say BYE MO! Until next year…
